Re: Call for National Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Racism on 13 May 2013

The Christian Federation of Malaysia is calling for a National Day of Prayer and Reflection against Racism on 13 May 2013.

We urge all churches to call their congregations to individual and corporate prayer and reflection against racism and to actions of peace and reconciliation in our beloved Malaysia.

It is time that we bury the spectre of May 13 that is raised repeatedly to haunt us as a nation.

Contrary to current rhetoric, the different ethnic groups have never been more united than after this 13th General Election.

It is an opportune time for us to create new memories this 13 May 2013, to celebrate our diversity and unwavering commitment to live peacefully with our neighbours.

May this be the beginning of a new tradition of 13 May.

Prayer for the Nations's 13th General Election

Facing the General Election

ADVISORIES on how to pray for the election and how to vote have been issued by the Christian Federation of Malaysia, Prayer United and by NECF Malaysia. Christians are by now well-aware of their role in nation-building and of their duty to cast their votes as part of biblical stewardship over the earth.

However, there are certain views on the relationship between the church and politics, and the view that the church must remain 'apolitical'. NECF does not endorse any particular party or candidate but we wish to share a general framework to guide Christians on such views.

Firstly, the church is not a political entity but the body of Christ. As such, her engagement is informed by Scripture. A faithful reading of Scripture would show that the truth of the Gospel must speak to every area of life. Genesis carries the divine mandate to humanity to rule and be stewards of God's earth and everything in it. This includes upholding justice for the common good of all human beings as creations made in the image of God and who are invested with dignity.

As stewards of God's creation, Christians are commanded to be a blessing to the nation and the world. We are also to be the salt of the earth and light of the world (Matthew 5: 13-16). We are reminded that we are not to conform to the world but to be a positive influence. We require our leaders to be just (Exodus 18: 19-21) and we hold them to the standards God places on earthly rulers.

If the church as salt and light is to influence the world, calls for the church to be apolitical are then self-contradictory. The meaning of "apolitical" is to be completely uninterested in politics, which cannot be if the church is to bring blessing upon the nation and fulfil her responsibilities in the interest of the common good.

To fulfil this mandate, what the church should be is non-partisan but must speak on moral and spiritual issues affecting the nation. The words of the Evangelical theologian, Carl Henry, are instructive, that the Church is "obliged to declare the criteria by which the nation will be ultimately judged and [the] divine standards to which man and society must conform if civilization is to endure". In the Bible, we see that this is what the Old Testament prophets did when speaking truth to power to sinful nations, including the leaders of Israel and Judah.

Religion, as part of Malaysian politics, has been politicised, abused and misused as an election strategy. Let the church have no part in that but let this not deter her either, from her mandate of speaking God's truth to our nation and leaders.

For this season where our nation is at the crossroads, let us as Christians engage one another, our fellow citizens and leaders with grace, compassion and mercy alongside the truth founded on Biblical principles that speak of God's heart for justice and righteousness

2012 - Year of Jubilee for Malaysia

This Sunday, 16 September 2012, is a turning point for our nation. It's MALAYSIA DAY!

It is again no coincidence that this year, the Malaysia Day falls on a Sunday, which will see Christians in the whole nation gather in different Churches to worship God and also to usher in the beginning of the Year of Jubilee for Malaysia.

While it is joyous to enter into the Year of Jubilee with a hope for a new and fresh beginning for us, we are also entering into the year of the 13th General Election which will be held very soon.

We need to pray for God's wisdom and guidance to help us make the right decision at this coming 13th General Election.

The following are events that have been organized for all Christians to heed the urgent call to gather and pray for our country.

Jubilee

The Lord commanded Israel to observe the Jubilee every 50th year of their nationhood. On 16 September, Malaysia celebrates her 49th anniversary as a nation but also begins her 50th year. While we are not bound to such observance, Jubilee is a reflection of all that God desires for all people and nation and of what He will eventually establish for eternity. When Jesus died and was resurrected, He made the way for mankind to enter into Jubilee, a rest for all people. Many are still bound by sin and to the evil one in our nation. Corruption, evil and crime are still prevalent in our land. But Jesus liberates and provides for our Jubilee! As God commanded Israel to declare every 50th year as the Year of Jubilee, we believe that it is also what God desires for all Malaysians. So let’s pray and believe for all to experience the blessings of Jubilee as Malaysia enters into her 50th year.

Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you. (Lev 25:10)

Prayer Suggestions:

• Thank God for the last 49 years of His faithfulness.
• Consecrate the coming 50th year as holy unto the Lord.
• Pray that God will release liberty upon all Malaysians.

ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL CHURCHES

Dear Church Leaders, Pastors and Friends,

            Warmest greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

We are happy to respectfully inform you that on 5 July 2012, in a historic moment for the Protestant churches in Malaysia, nineteen (19) church and prayer leaders met at the office of the Methodist Church in Malaysia, Petaling Jaya.  They came from all over the country, representing most of the major prayer networks in the country, including those of NECF and CCM, and also denominational and regional Pastors’/Ministers’ Fellowships. All came at short notice but with prepared hearts and minds, as each had been burdened with an urgent sense of the Lord’s call for united prayer for the church and nation.

During the dialogue, various participants shared their concerns. There was general agreement that the country is facing many critical issues and the Malaysian Church needs to come together in prayer. And it was noted that, if the Church is to play a significant role in national transformation, we must take seriously the call to live as a holy people, to strive for genuine unity, and to pour our hearts out in prayer for our nation!

The meeting was marked by a great sense of unity and hope, as well as much joy in every heart over the common desire for a united prayer initiative to bring the whole church together to seek God’s blessing for our country. We believe that through such an expression of unity and love for one another (Ephesians 4:1-6) Christ would be truly glorified. We praise and thank God for giving us this unity of the Spirit in the first place!

We therefore would like humbly to invite all the churches and Christians in this country to join with us in a common prayer platform for the nation. We do this in response to God’s promise in 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (NIV):

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

This united platform will be called PRAYER UNITED and its terms of reference are:

THE VISION

·               All Christians, churches and prayer networks in Malaysia coming together to pray for the church and our nation.

THE PURPOSE

·               The first purpose is to set up a united prayer movement for the whole church to coordinate prayer and to enhance unity among Christians.

·               The second purpose is to challenge the whole church to pray together for the transformation of society and nation. In particular, the focus will be on the two up-coming key national events, namely, the National Jubilee Celebration, beginning on 16 Sept, 2012, the upcoming General Elections, GE13.

THE OBJECTIVES

The following are the objectives of PRAYER UNITED:

·            To identify key strategic issues for prayer, and to communicate these clearly and quickly to all prayer networks and churches.

·                   To serve as a link for all those involved in prayer in our churches, including both those in NECF and CCM, and to coordinate our efforts to ensure that our prayers are united in purpose and focus.

·               To challenge the church to pray for God’s special blessings upon our nation in the Jubilee Year (Lev 25: 10-12), the 50^th Year of the formation of our nation, so that it will usher in a new season of peace, prosperity, freedom and justice for our land.

·               To call on the church to pray that the up-coming General Election, GE13, will be carried out peacefully and with integrity, and that those elected will be honest and able men and women, who sincerely have the country’s true and long-term interest in their hearts.

THE WAY FORWARD

1.              The work of PRAYER UNITED will be coordinated for the moment by an Interim Committee, with representations from all major prayer networks present at the meeting on 5 July, 2012. This committee will function until after the Jubilee Celebrations and GE13, when the present set up will then be reviewed.

2.              All communications from PRAYER UNITED will be coordinated by the two Joint-Secretaries, Ms Chrisanne Chin and Rev Andy Chi, who are respectively in charge of the prayer ministries of CCM and NECF.

3.              All communication released would be made available in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese and Tamil for dissemination to churches.

We look to you to join us in this spiritual venture of prayer so that all of us will see the Lord’s blessings poured out upon our nation, bringing about a powerful transformation for the good and well-being of all citizens in our land. May our prayers and our lives serve to glorify our Lord Jesus Christ, even as we pray: ‘Your Kingdom come; Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven!’  Let us humbly seek God together to ask Him to reveal His glory in Malaysia in our day. Let us also ask Him for grace that we may fulfil His purpose for His church and nation in our generation. May His name be praised and glorified exceedingly in every way!

A Review of the Healing For Our Land Revival Meetings

Recently many Churches in Kuala Lumpur joined hands to organize the following Revival Meetings.

Healing For Our Land (M4J) from the 6th - 9th June 2012.

They started with The Kingdom Revival Conference in FGA, followed by 3 nights of The Festival of God's Power at the Bukit Jalil Car Park.

2012 24-7 Year of Prayer for Malaysia - June

We have come to the middle of the year and this month, we are encouraged to take stock of our lifestyle. Whether we are living in excess or in need, let us take some time to ponder on on God's marvellous creation around us and develop an attitude of gratefulness and appreciation for it.

Together we shall continue to pray and seek God for wisdom to be good stewards of all that God has blessed us with.

local churches, businesses and some may even assemble

in large stadiums and other public venues. In some 

places, television, radio and internet will help to connect

and align our prayers even more.

their communities as they offer themselves to God as 

instruments through which their prayers can be answered. 

The Global Day of Prayer anticipates the forming or 

furthering of local alliances among pastors, churches, 

missions and business leaders, to bring practical, 

transformational blessing to their communities. This is 

where prayer becomes a lifestyle. 

The call to unity and repentance is deepening.

This year 2012 in Malaysia we will turn our eyes to Jesus as our 4 ‘R’s – Redeemer, Restorer, Rebuilder, and Rewarder. As we are also entering a significant year in our nation’s spiritual landscape, Jubilee year, we need to seek God as who he is – the 4 ‘R’s, and pray for change in accordance.

In line with what had just taken place in our country two weeks ago at the Bersih 3.0 Rally, is it a coincidence that the organizers of the 2012 24-7 Year of Prayer for Malaysia, planned this month's prayer emphais to be on "Media & Politics" or is it by the wisdom of God that this topic was chosen.

It is even more urgent now that we pick up our momentum and continue to Prayer Until Something Happens (PUSH) for our nation.

World Day of Prayer (WDP) is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year, and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service. 

• It is a movement initiated and carried out by women in more than 170 countries and regions.
• It is a movement symbolized by an annual day of celebration – the first Friday of March – to which all people are welcome.
• It is a movement which brings together women of various races, cultures, and traditions in closer fellowship, understanding, and action throughout the year.

Many churches in Malaysia has also set aside this day to join hands with about 3 million people from around the world to pray for our nation of Malaysia. Let us as Malaysian citizens rise up to the occasion and jump in the band to pray for “Justice To Prevail” for our beloved Nation.

Many Churches with have their Church doors opened for a 24 hour prayer time in the Church. On that day Christians will gather for a time to reflect on the challenge that we all have in our daily lives to stand up for justice within our community, our country and the world. 

Let us take heed to the prophet Micah words, 

“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).

Rev Eu: Article 153 remarks had to be said

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 — Senior Christian leader Reverend Dr Eu Hong Seng said today his controversial Christmas Eve remarks about the country’s constitutional protection for Bumiputeras was something that “needed somebody to say it.”

He told The Malaysian Insider today that he had nothing to fear despite the fierce reaction from various Malay groups and denials by the government that Christians or any minority group had been sidelined.

When asked if he thought his speech during a Christmas Eve gathering last week was too provocative, Eu said in a matter-of-fact manner that “it is what it is”, and that “it needed somebody to say it.”

“Enough is said, there is nothing to add.

“There are enough MPs who are well-versed in this issue to carry on with the debate,” he told The Malaysian Insider today.

He described Perkasa’s call for him to be investigated for sedition an example of fear-mongering, adding that no one needs to be “fearful” in this country despite the vehemence from the Malay rights group

“This is not political; I am talking about the social wellbeing of everybody. It is biblical to speak up against any social imbalances,” he said.

The National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) chairman had said on Christmas Eve that the Federal Constitution’s Article 153 was akin to “bullying” if it only protected the rights of one group.

Article 153 states that it is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s responsibility “to safeguard the special position of the Malays and natives of any of the States of Sabah and Sarawak and the legitimate interests of other communities in accordance with the provisions of this Article”.

In his speech, Eu had stressed that he did not have problems with rights of the Malays and the Sultans but “what irks many of us are the ‘shifting rights’” of the majority.

His remarks prompted demands from Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali yesterday for Eu to be probed by the police.

Ibrahim said the authorities should charge those who questioned Article 153 with sedition to safeguard national security.

The Pasir Mas MP said disputing the provision would only lead to civil strife, as it was part and parcel of what he described as an established “social contract” that could not be amended without consent from the Malay Rulers.

Amid the growing debate, opposition leaders have claimed that the provision had been manipulated by ruling Malay party Umno and was now being used as “a weapon of aggression”.

Constitutional expert Prof Abdul Aziz Bari had said that Article 153 meant the King must safeguard Bumiputera privileges without impinging on the legitimate interests of other communities.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin previously denied that the provision had been used to bully any community.

NECF MALAYSIA'S VISION FOR NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION

Transformation Vision

The theme for NECF Malaysia's nation-building agenda is "Transforming the Nation through the Local Church". To realise this theme, it is our vision to see Christians within the nation live out their purpose and calling as agents of transformation in the various places and sphere of influence that God has placed and called each one to be in.

Agents of Transformation

As agents of transformation, Christians, as individuals as well as collectively as the church, must live as witnesses and instruments to proclaim the Good News and seek the welfare and good of society and the nation.

To do so, Christians found in and belonging to every sphere of society and within the institutional structures - whether in the family unit, neighborhood/communities, profession/place of work, politics/governance, human rights/justice, media/entertainment or economics - must intercede strategically, live as authentic disciples of Christ and engage in intentional mission for the purpose of transforming society and the nation.

Implementation

The focus of this Transformation Vision is to inform and direct believers' participation in every sphere of society to address and mediate change in their own social context and environment towards justice and righteousness.

This is achieved by identifying and connecting all believers, facilitating their roles and empowering them by the Holy Spirit to pursue good in every aspect of human life and interest. Christians should mediate change by proclaiming the Good News, becoming socially involved in issues plaguing society and the sphere of influence they are in and by engaging the social-cultural institutions for the common good of all people to the glory of God.

The Role of the Local Church

The local church must play the role of encouraging, nurturing and enabling believers for this work of mission in seeking the welfare of the city, society and the nation. This Transformation Vision is not intended to divert believers' involvement in the ministries and programmes of the local church. On the contrary, believers are expected and encouraged to live out authentic discipleship wherever God has placed them in, whether in churches, workplaces or the communities.

NECF Malaysia's Role

NECF Malaysia, through the Nation-Building Committee, will strive to promote this Transformation Vision by providing consultation, facilitation, assistance, networking, and other services to churches and individuals to inform this vision, initiate opportunities, impart skills and know-how and implement strategic action to realise this vision.
